A new home in Ladue, MO had a nice 20’ x 20’ brick paver patio with a lovely view overlooking the pool and a lush golf course. Unfortunately, they couldn’t sit outside and enjoy the view much past 2 pm because of the sun glare from facing due west. A covered patio would solve the problem.

BEFORE: The new home’s 20×20′ brick paver patio overlooking the pool was nice, but afternoon sun drove them inside.

AFTER: Mosby designs a patio cover that compliments the look of the home, with a fireplace focal point.

While Mosby Building Arts’ designers worked on the outdoor remodel of a patio cover that would match the exterior of their stucco home, the homeowners revealed a desire to have a fire pit. This inspired the idea of a full-height brick fireplace that also serves as a corner anchor for the outdoor family room.

BEFORE: The original, uncovered patio.

AFTER: a ceiling of tongue and groove fir and surround-sound speakers help create an inviting outdoor living room.

A ceiling fan keeps this spot cool. The Mosby construction crew was able to salvage and re-use the existing brick pavers that had to be removed to add the columns and fireplace.

The new porch echoes the home’s stucco elements while adding warm wood and natural stone with the columns.

The fireplace has a historical patina. A St. Louis City home was dismantled, and part of its brick is in this fireplace, with limestone accents that match the column bases.

The flat-screen TV mounted above the fireplace mantle is weather-proof and hooks into the sound system so it’s audible above pool splashing.

Another comfort feature is a remote-controlled blind system. These solar shades, by Somfy Exteriors, line the south and west sides of the roofed enclosure, and it is ultra-easy to control which shade and which height they need as the sun changes positions throughout the afternoon and evening. When not in use, the shades tuck neatly into a slot inside the fir tongue and groove ceiling.

Fully furnished with space for grilling and easy access to the pool and backyard, this covered patio has become their outdoor living room and their favorite place to hang out, all day and night.
