3 Season Screen Porch & Patio

A couple with a sizeable extended family and social circle wanted a multi-tasking outdoor living area on their Kirkwood, MO home. They longed for places to have a solitary cup of coffee or a dinner party. Their concerns were privacy from a public walk way along one side of their backyard, and protection from when the western sun beat down. They wanted and a screen porch that felt substantial and was low-maintenance, and a patio large enough to accommodate separate seating areas, and an outdoor grill area.

Mosby designed and built a 16x16 foot 3-season screen porch that extends off the breakfast room, with beadboard ceilings and porcelain tile flooring. The sun shielding privacy screens of the expansive windows overlook the landscaping in the backyard and the new patio area. The ceiling fan for circulation keeps the room temperate even the hottest days.

The stone paver patio accommodates a large dining table, seating area around a stone fire pit and a curved stone grilling station that houses both their gas grill and Green Egg, with plenty of countertop space. The new landscaping includes a low-maintenance “fence” of trees that grow relatively fast and retain leaves most of the year, plus plenty of deciduous 4-seaon plantings to create an inviting space all year long.
