Many people ring in the New Year with resolutions to start new and fresh. This applies to personal goals such as losing weight, but also to desires you may have to enhance your surroundings. As the saying goes, out with the old and in with the new!

It’s natural to want to surround ourselves with items that inspire us and convey feelings of comfort and peace.  In 2018 we saw a shift from formal dining rooms to more open floor plans and more earthy colors like soft greens and browns.  So what kind of styles will we be seeing in homes for the upcoming year? Here are several trends we predict to see in 2019.

Multi-Function, Undermount Kitchen Sinks

Homeowners are opting for large, single-basin sinks rather than double sinks to make room for bulky pots and pans. The new trend emerging is larger, single basin sinks that are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials, and include a wide range of accessories, including cutting boards, utensil trays, drying racks and colanders

Pendant Lighting That Makes a Statement

Homeowners will be illuminating their living areas with lighting that represents their unique style and personality. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to put your own stamp on a space. Ornate chandeliers show off a sophisticated home. Industrial metal lighting exudes a modern edge. Gold lighting accessories are hot right now and drum and lantern pendants will continue to be popular, as well.

Graphite appliances

In 2019, the hot new appliance finish is graphite! This modern, dark gray, matte finish is being offered on ranges, dishwashers, refrigerators and even washers and dryers. Appliances play a big part in setting the tone in a space, so don’t overlook them as a legitimate design element.

Herb Gardens in the Kitchen

With the focus on green and sustainability, it makes sense there’s a trend toward indoor gardens. The clean food movement has people more interested in growing herbs, such as chives and cilantro, in their kitchen. Indoor gardens are nice, because you can tend to them 365 days a year from the comfort of your home.

Copper Accents

Copper is a beautiful metal with warm undertones that exudes a welcoming ambiance. Depending on the space, it is versatile and can skew modern, farmhouse, or industrial. This metal is meant to stand out and is at its best when paired with a neutral background, including natural materials like wood and marble. This particular metal also shines especially bright when used in geometric shapes. Some ways to incorporate copper include range hoods, stools, pots, and sinks.

Terrazzo Flooring

The traditional material, terrazzo, is making a comeback. It’s a composite material consisting of marble chips in cement.  It’s ground smooth then polished and mostly used for floor and wall treatments. One of the most well-known examples of terrazzo flooring is the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It has a slightly retro-glam look! Current technological advances have taken terrazzo beyond just flooring and into countertops and backsplashes.
