Q: Why is my ductwork making a ticking sound?
A: The noise inside your wall is your metal ductwork as it expands & contracts from the change of temperature inside your walls which is supplied by your forced air furnace. It is a noisy nuisance but not a big threat for the structure or your safety. The noise occurs because the sheet metal gets longer as the heat runs through the ductwork and also makes a corresponding sound as the metal cools and contracts after the furnace stops running. Sometimes it is from long runs of ductwork, metal ductwork pushed tightly against the framing wood of your house, and sometime the ductwork lacks fasteners or screws. Aluminum ductwork that was used in the 1950s was prone to much more expansion, contraction and noise than the galvanized steel used today. It is no longer used for standard residential applications probably for the noise reason. If you have shinier aluminum ductwork you have a noisy house and it will persist. Even steel can be very noisy when it makes that “ticking” sound as it moves inside your walls. Get used to it because it can be difficult or impossible to stop unless you rebuild the whole wall and ductwork system and foam insulate inside each wall cavity.
