Train Traffic Vibrations to House

by | General Construction & Repairs, Home Improvement Library

The vibration is cause for concern but with little practical remedy. The threat to your house foundation is minor as long as the foundation is installed on solid soil and footings. A good poured concrete foundation with typical steel reinforcing on solid soil is usually over designed.

Your house will experience potential ills much more quickly from the vibrations but I doubt that the vibrations will cause settling. Most long term problems from house settling occur from poor or inadequate surface water drainage. You must maintain good grading and sloping of the soil away from your house to avoid these water runoff problems.

If the foundation is weak, the vibrations could cause flaws (like cracking) sooner. Think of this vibration as a daily, minor earthquake test.  Be vigilant. Your house is on a faster “feedback” time table than those without vibrations. Potential flaws will just occur sooner.
