Mosby Tour: A Rustically Elegant Master Suite Addition
A South St. Louis County couple nearing their retirement years wanted to update key parts of the home they’ve lived in for 30 years. A top priority was having a light-filled master suite with a larger bathroom. They had spent the better part of a year investigating and choosing materials for the remodel, and engaged Mosby Building Arts to help bring the project to life.
By adding a 3-foot deep cantilevered bump out to the rear wall of the master suite (shown above right), the master suite gains valuable space to expand the bedroom with a seating area (shown below). This project also included adding a walk-out basement door on the side of the house, which it had been lacking previously.
With additional Beechworth windows, porcelain tile flooring with a rustic wood look, and switching out to a white bead board ceiling with Storm Cloud Gray walls (by Benjamin Moore), the room becomes light and airy, giving the couple room to move about and enjoy the view of their lush yards.
The best new feature of the renovated master suite is the enlarged bathroom, shown above through the sliding barn door. The partition walls stop short of the ceiling so natural light pours in from all sides. And the flooring and ceiling making a continuous run through both spaces adds to the spacious feel.
The extra square footage allows for the bathroom to be completely reconfigured, adding a soaker tub and a generous walk-in shower with bench seating. And take a closer look at the photo above right – all the areas under the shower bench and soaker tub is additional storage!

Enchanting features of the rustic-yet-elegant master bath is the porcelain tile flooring running up the walls of the shower, as well, and check out the angled vanity (above right). That used to be a base cabinet in their kitchen, and the owner gave it a rustic makeover so we could add a Bronzite Onyx top (also used on the tub deck)and vessel sink atop it.
The bathroom whites, greys and browns get a sophisticated contrast with dark, Tuscan bronze plumbing fixtures and glass edging. And the shower has a low-clearance threshold, which along with the bench seating and hand faucet, will make this shower accessible when the time comes. And they plan on staying in the home for the long-term, so it’s a nice bonus feature of a gorgeous new master suite.
