A couple bought a brick ranch home in Kirkwood with an eye toward it being their “forever home.” While the house had good bones, they wanted to update the place for how they lived, so they teamed with Mosby Building Arts for a whole house remodel. The scope of work included all new windows, doors, painting, lighting and new or restored flooring. Let’s explore the finer design details photographically.
The owners consulted with their Mosby designer on ways to open up the floor plan and create a fresh, contemporary look (an example is shown in the photos above), and made all their materials selections for every room of the ground floor. Then they left for an extended vacation while Mosby went to work with an accelerated construction schedule to complete the work so the couple would come home to a “new” home for the holidays. The original floor plan was segmented into distinct rooms, which felt confining. Removing the walls that divided the foyer from the living room and enlarging the passage from living to family room creates open space and flow that instantly felt better. The rooms receive extra tailoring with the addition of molding and trim. The family was not interested in keeping the formal dining room, wishing to instead have a large open kitchen for entertaining and communing.
So the dining room transforms into a home office, with an enlarged opening to the living room so whomever is working remains a part of the action. Previously, the family room was separated from the kitchen. By removing walls on two sides of the space they now have an extended eat-in kitchen that embraces the living room and creates a functional and communal flow. This space also has easy access to the back yard and sun room, so it’s become the most-used gathering space in the home.
Built in 1958, this Kirkwood home retained its original kitchen. While still nice, it would no longer match the new design theme of the rest of the home, now visible with an open floor plan. The new kitchen is bright and lively, with a bar-height work space, abundant granite countertops and plenty of specialized storage.
Maple cabinets with a white satin finish and white subway tile backsplashes contrast with honey wood floors and stainless steel appliances. Day light and task lighting are perfectly balanced to make the kitchen bright and welcoming all hours of the day. See more photos of this kitchen.
The original closet is expended in width and depth to hold a washer and dryer. Bringing the laundry up from the basement was a specific aging in-place request, and it makes sense to keep laundry near the bedrooms and bathrooms. Best of all, when the doors are closed, no one knows this is the laundry room!
The original master bathroom had a cave-like shower. The owners longed for a walk-in shower – is that possible? Indeed it is. Staying within the original footprint, the bathroom opens up with a fully accessible and absolutely gorgeous walk-in shower with bench seating. And there’s far more storage space and room to move about. It was a glorious moment when the homeowners came back from vacation to see the transformation, and they are in love with their polished new home.
